Poverty Support
Ending Female & Child Poverty
Hull is the fourth most deprived area in England, and poverty falls hardest on women and children from Black and minority ethnic communities. Hull Sisters fights back — through food, essentials, financial support, and strategic partnerships.
When money is tight, women act as the ‘shock absorbers’ of poverty, going without food, clothes, or heating to protect other family members.

Our Food Bank
Hull Sisters provides a food bank service to support individuals experiencing poverty and financial hardship. We collect surplus food from the public, local food banks, and Fareshare Hull, which is then distributed to those in need within the community. We also offer hygiene products, sanitary items, and other essential household and baby supplies.
Community Meals
We provide freshly cooked lunches daily, serving over 150 women and children. These meals are culture-centred and ensure access to nutritious food while creating a welcoming, inclusive environment. Beyond addressing hunger, community meals reduce social isolation and create informal opportunities for women to share experiences and support one another.
Healthy Eating & Nutrition
We held several workshops focused on the benefits of eating organic food and creating nutritious meals, including salads and juices made from a variety of ethnic fruits and vegetables. In response to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, we are now shifting our focus to simple, energy-efficient, and wholesome recipes that are culturally appropriate and affordable.
The weekly baking programme teaches practical cooking skills while introducing basic enterprise concepts — exploring pathways to small-scale income generation through food.

Testimonials
“I am a refugee from Afghanistan. I have been given food, clothes, jumpers, blankets, towels, and sanitary items from Hull Sisters. From a grant provided by the Smallwood Trust, awarded to Hull Sisters for women who struggle to pay their bills, I received money to get baby clothes and pay my bills. Whenever I come to see my support worker, the taxi was paid by Hull Sisters. I felt so good that I found a place where I supported whenever I needed it.”
Through a small grant from Rosa, Hull Sisters supported Shirin* with food, sanitary items, curtains, household furniture, and regular visits and check-in calls. In addition, we provided continual support for Shirin throughout her pregnancy, and she gave birth to a healthy baby.
With our support, Shirin came out of her depression. She has been extremely content with the support, and as a result, five more women in nearby flats have also contacted Hull Sisters for help.
